We read to know we’re not alone is most often misattributed to C.S. Lewis (1898–1963). However, the quote originates in the mouth of a fictional student character, Peter Whistler, in William Nicholson’s screenplay and the 1993 film Shadowlands, starring Anthony Hopkins and Debra Winger, about the relationship between Lewis and the American poet, Joy Davidman (1915–60).
